Five Tips To Prepare For A Roof Replacement

by Leslie Turner

Whether you're getting a new roof because yours is damaged or you're upgrading to one that is energy efficient, there are several steps you need to take to get ready for the roofer's arrival. A roof replacement is a significant investment of your time and money, so a few steps taken by the homeowner before the process begins will make everything operate a lot smoother.

Cut the Nearby Grass

Roofers will lay out most of their supplies as close to the job site as possible, which usually means next to your driveway. While they will most likely put down tarps and covers to protect your plants and other items, you can make their job easier by trimming all your landscaping and cutting the grass near the roof. This will ensure that they keep any damage that may arise as minimal as possible, as well as not lose tools and supplies that can be covered by foliage.

Remove Wall Decorations

While you don't need to take every single thing off your walls before a roof replacement, you'll want to remove some of your more precious belongings, especially those that are hanging by a single nail. Your house will vibrate a little while the work is going on, which always leaves the possibility that things may fall and break.

Move Your Vehicles

If you have a two story house, you can probably get away with leaving your car in your garage, but if you have a one-story, it's likely that three days of roofers walking all over the top of your house may cause things to fall, even inside your garage. It's better to move them to a friend's house, if you can, but at the very least, you should make sure that the driveway is clear of vehicles or other things. The roofers will use that as a staging ground for all of their equipment. They may also use it for the location that the garbage bin will go for your old roof.

Cover Attic Items

If a roof replacement takes any length of time, it may very well rain while you're in the middle of the project, so cover any items in your attic that could be damaged. Even if no water gets in, the debris from the construction process will most likely leave a layer of sediment in your attic anyway, so covering your items with a piece of vinyl or a large tarp is a wise idea.

Talk to your roofer about other things you need to do to prepare for your roof replacement.
