Five Signs Of Damaged Roof Trusses

by Leslie Turner

The trusses, or rafters, are the main support system for your roof. Even a single damaged rafter can compromise the integrity of the roof and the safety of your home. Know the signs of truss damage so you can schedule a repair promptly if problems arise.

1. Sagging Ridge Line

The ridge line of your roof should be perfectly straight and level. If the trusses suffer damage, then the ridge line may begin to sag. You can often spot the sag from the ground, so there is no need to climb up on the roof.

2. Bowing Trusses

If a truss begins to weaken, then it will bend under the weight of the roof. Damage can be a result of subpar materials, but external factors can also lead to damage. Weight, such as from heavy snowfall or overly heavy roofing materials, can cause truss bowing. Foundation damage as well as damage from storms can cause trusses to bow or even crack, eventually leading to bowed trusses.

3. Pooling Water

Failed trusses can cause the roof sheathing to sag. This may not be visible from the ground during dry weather, but it is common to notice pooling water in the sagging areas during rain. Pooling water can lead to two additional problems. First, leaks are more likely to form where water pools. Second, the weight of the pooled water can cause a roof collapse. Sagging isn't always indicative of a truss problem, as it could just be the sheathing that is failing. Regardless, an inspection and repair will be necessary.

4. Popped Bracing

Trusses are typically held in place with metal bracing. You can see the braces if you go into the attic and look at the trusses. Most bracing is installed at the base of each truss as well as where they meet at the peak. There will also be wood bracing between trusses. If any of the braces aren't properly anchored, such as if the screws have popped out, then your roof is no longer properly supported or stable. Repair is necessary.

5. High Wall Cracks

When a truss is giving out, the weight distribution of the roof will be out of alignment. This will put undue pressure on certain walls in the house. The wall will begin to bow away from where it meets the ceiling. At first, there may be cracks, but in severe cases, the wall and ceiling separate and a gap will form. Collapse can be a real concern since the wall is not designed to hold the weight of the unsupported roof.

If you suspect damage to your trusses, contact a local roofing company like JC Roofing & Insulating immediately.
