Consider Having Your Old Asphalt Shingle Roof Covered With Rubber Roofing

by Leslie Turner

If you're looking at different types of roofing for your home, don't forget about rubber roofing. Rubber roofs are common for flat roofs and commercial buildings, but they are also suitable for asphalt shingle roofs with slopes. Here's a look at having a rubber roof installed and why you might want one.

You Won't Have To Tear Off Your Old Roof

Rubber roofing is usually installed over asphalt shingles on a sloped roof. This saves you from paying to tear off your old roof and have it hauled away. However, the rubber membrane isn't attached directly to the shingles. Something has to be between them instead, so insulation is usually added. Then, the rubber roofing is bonded to the insulation board or foam.

The Membrane Seams Are Sealed

Rubber roofing comes in large sheets. Small areas of your roof might be covered in a single sheet and not need any seams. When seams are needed, they are sealed securely so leaks aren't a problem.

This is done by layering one membrane over the top of the other and applying adhesive and seam tape between the layers. Then the top layer is rolled to apply pressure to the tape and adhesive so they adhere to both pieces of rubber membranes.

Rubber Roofs Are Tough

One reason to consider rubber roofing is that it is tough. It stands up to rain and sun exposure better than asphalt shingles, so a rubber roof has a longer life. As long as you don't walk around on the roof, the risk of punctures and damage is low. However, if a problem develops, rubber roofing is easy to repair by patching it.

A Rubber Roof Might Help With Power Bills

Rubber roofing can even help with energy efficiency due to the way it's installed. The layer of insulation that's put down first reduces heat transfer. This keeps heat out of your attic in the summer and inside the attic in the winter.

A Rubber Roof Needs Little Maintenance

Like any roofing, it's good to check a rubber roof once a year, or more often when it's convenient. You might be able to check it from the street if your roof has a slope. Since your roof has a slope, leaves will probably fall off naturally, but if they don't, you may want to clean leaves off at the end of autumn.

It's also important to keep your gutters cleaned out so there is good drainage from the roof. If you suspect damage, or for more information about rubber roofing, call a roofing contractor promptly so repairs can be done as soon as they're needed.
