Signs Your Roll Roofing May Need To Be Replaced

Roll roofing is an asphalt-based roofing product that can be rolled directly onto a roof. Roll roofing is easy-to-install and cheap, but unfortunately, it does not have a very long lifespan. For this reason, it is not used very often. However, if you do have roll roofing installed on your roof, you need to watch for signs that the roof is nearing the end of its lifespan and needs to be replaced by a roofing company. Here are a few of the key signs that you may notice if your roll roofing has reached the end of its lifespan. 

Your Roll Roofing Is Starting to Lift

One of the signs that your roll roofing may need to be replaced is that the roll roofing is starting to lift or separate. Roll roofing is rolled onto a roof, much like you would roll wrapping paper over a box. It then adheres to the roof with heat. However, as the material ages, the edges can start to lift upward, much like the edges of wrapping paper that are not held into place with tape. When the edges start to lift, the roof is nearing the end of its lifespan. 

Your Roll Roofing is Starting to Bubble

Another common sign that your roll roofing may need to be replaced is that your roll roofing is starting to bubble. Roll roofing can start to bubble if water or air is able to get underneath the surface of the rolled material. This is a tell-tale sign that your roofing material is no longer protecting your roof, and a roofing contractor needs to replace it. 

Your Roll Roofing is Cracking or Tearing

The final sign that your roll roofing may need to be replaced is material that is cracking or tearing. Roll roofing expands and contracts in hot and cold weather. Unfortunately, as the material ages, this expansion and contraction take a toll on the material, and it can start to crack, tear or rip during the expansion and contraction process. A roofing company should be called in to replace roll roofing that is ripped, torn, or cracked. 

Roll roofing has a much shorter lifespan than other types of roofing products. However, it is also much cheaper and faster to install than other roofing products. As such, it may be used for budget roofing projects or in the event that a roof needs to be installed quickly before a storm rolls through.
