Why Roof Moss Can Be Such a Big Problem

If you are familiar with roof moss, you likely already know how unsightly it can be to see it on your home. However, the problem with roof moss is more than just aesthetics. Roof moss can also cause problems with your roof. Here is what you need to know about the dangers of roof moss, and how you can get rid of it.

Your Roof Can Leak

When that roof moss actually starts to grow, it will grow suddenly and be really thick on the surface. That thickness is what causes the shingles on your roof to lift off the surface, which is how moss can get underneath your shingles. Anything below the moss is going to rot and deteriorate over time, which will cause the roofing material to form a leak that allows water to get into your home. 

If moss is not getting underneath your shingles, then it may be causing damage to the top surface. Take a look at the granules of the asphalt shingles after you remove the moss from the surface. You may notice that granules are missing due to deteriorating over time, which will cause your roof to be more likely to form a leak on the surface. This is due to the shingles being more exposed to the sun, water, and air over time. 

Your Roof Can Be Cleaned

Thankfully, anyone can remote roof moss if they know what they are doing. The process starts by getting the roof wet so that all the moss can become soft. Do this by spraying down the surface with your garden hose, and allow it to soak in. You should then be able to use a scrub brush to rub the majority of the moss off the surface of your shingles. It may require applying more water to the roof one you scrub off a layer of moss, but it will be a good first step for removal.

You'll need to apply a moss killing cleaning product that will get rid of the growth on the surface. This can be purchased from your local home improvement store Once you apply it with a sprayer, follow the directions for how long the cleaning product should stay on the surface, and then scrub the surface down again to get rid of the remaining remnants of moss.
