Questions to Ask Your Roofing Contractor During an Estimate Appointment

by Leslie Turner

If your home needs a new roof, one of the first things you'll need to do is schedule a few estimate appointments. During an estimate, a roofing contractor will take a look at your roof and home, run a few calculations, and give you a quote for how much they expect the roof replacement will cost. There's not a lot that you, as the homeowner, will need to do during an estimate appointment. However, it is a good idea for you to spend a couple of minutes chatting with the roofing contractor so you can ask the following questions.

1. What materials does the quote call for?

Every roofing company has its own preferred brands of materials. It's important to take this into account when comparing quotes. One company may come back with a higher quote, but it's because they use higher quality materials. Ask the roofing contractor what brand of shingles they plan to use, and then do some of your own, independent research to ensure it's a brand you are comfortable with.

2. How soon will the company be able to do the work?

Roofers that offer the best deals and do the best work often book up quickly. They may have a one or two-month wait before they can get to you. Depending on how urgently you need your roof replaced, you may be better off going with a company that charges a little more because they're available sooner. So with each quote you get, make sure you also get a projected starting date.

3. Does your roof need any additional vents or other accessories?

Some roofing companies will just give you an estimate for a roof replacement with the assumption that no extra work will need to be done, and then if they discover the roof needs new vents or something similar, they'll add that cost on later. Other companies will assess the need for new or additional vents from the get-go and include this in their estimate. Make sure you clarify whether your roof will need more or new vents and whether or not this cost is included in the quote you're being given.

Asking just a few questions can give you a lot more insight into a quote that is being offered up by a roofing contractor. And when you are making decisions about a purchase so large as a new roof, you need all of the insight you can get. Learn more by contacting roofing companies like Pyramid Roofing Inc.
