Signs That It's Time To Have Some New Gutters Installed On Your Home

by Leslie Turner

If your home's gutters are more than a few years old, it's a good idea to keep a lookout for signs that they need to be replaced. Waiting too long to invest in new gutters can result in unnecessary damage and inconvenience. Here are some signs that it might be time to have some new gutters installed:

Your Patching Just Doesn't Work Anymore

Gutters can perform well enough to keep homeowners happy for some time once they start to develop cracks and other types of damage. You can patch small holes and cracks up when they become apparent to get more life out of your gutters when the leaking becomes too annoying or worrisome.

However, when you must keep repatching places that you have repaired before or you find yourself patching new cracks and holes regularly, chances are that your gutters are brittle and have succumbed to wear and tear. This is a good time to seriously consider having the gutters replaced altogether. Waiting too long can result in a complete gutter system breakdown and no way to catch excess water until you can have everything replaced.

The Gutters are Hanging on By a Thread

Gutters should be solidly attached to the house they are serving. If they are loose or just hanging off the roof, they cannot perform to their fullest capabilities, and there is likely a lot of water that's falling between the roof and the gutters and into the ground below. If you notice that your gutters are just drooping off your roof, try securing them with screws. If the gutters are old and worn out, it won't take long for them to start sagging again, and that's when you'll know that it's probably time to at least consider having the gutters replaced.

You're Noticing Water Damage Below the Gutters

A home's soffits and fascia boards are located right below and behind the gutters. If the gutters are not functioning properly, water can cause damage to the soffits and fascia boards which in turn can mean the need for expensive repairs. It's important to inspect your home's soffits and fascia boards a couple of times a year to determine whether any damage is developing.

If so, it's a good idea to schedule a consultation appointment with your gutter contractor to find out whether having the gutters replaced can help you avoid further damage. You may be able to get away with replacing just parts of your gutter system to nip the problem in the bud.
